Mandala Assessment

“The key to creating a positive future is to learn who you are so you know the difference between what is your vision and what belongs to other people around you.” — Sandra Ingerman

Symbols of growth and wholeness can be found throughout the natural world, as they are microcosms of the larger process. What is the Mandala?
The mandala is a symbol of wholeness.  It is used as a tool for achieving deep understanding of the Self.  Also known as The Circle of Consciousness, it encompasses both the inner and outer life of an individual and the dynamic relationship between the ego and the greater self.

Carl Jung popularized the use of the mandala to describe the process of Individuation, a natural process which honors a person’s unique growth during an entire lifetime.

Joan Kellog developed the Archetypal Stages of the Great Round of Mandala (also known as MARI).
This model consists of thirteen stages which represent significant developmental processes of personal growth through the entire life cycle of an individual.  Each stage has its particular tasks and characteristics.

Even small steps, when consistent and authentic, can lead us to a fulfilled life. What is the MARI?
The MARI is a simple, non-verbal assessment which uses color and ancient universal symbols to identify current conscious and unconscious physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual strengths and hindrances.

The MARI gives immediate feedback and can be used at any time for personal insight and growth, as a means of identifying areas of focus for therapy, and to assess progress during and at the end of therapy.  As a tool for insight, it can:

  • Assess early pre-natal or birth trauma
  • Identify unresolved developmental issues which contribute to current difficulties,
  • Highlight areas of conflict or tension
  • Identify self-destructive patterns, physiological conditions, and psychological, emotional or spiritual issues
  • Validate areas of strength.

The MARI's simple assessment uses ancient and universal symbols to identify current consciousness. What does the MARI reveal that is useful to the individual?
By gaining awareness of the conscious and unconscious strengths that we possess we can learn to utilize those attributes to address the blockages or hindrances.  Both are revealed in a MARI assessment.
Also, by understanding the necessary tasks of each of the developmental processes, we come to relate to our lives as dynamic and unfolding.  Our life task is to be aligned with our core self, our essence, our soul.  From this perspective, there is no such thing as failure and all experiences are opportunity for helping to make sense of the experience of being human.

Who can administer the MARI?
Only professionally trained therapists who are graduates of The Association of Teachers of Mandala Assessment, Inc. can administer the MARI.
